Like so many balladeers who have been asked, where were you trained or where did you study music, Tommie’s reply is, “from the school of legends.” In other words, he grew up listening to music which became the foundation for his foray into performing as an artist. But, of course, his favorite genres of music would be R&B and soul.
The soulful blends of legendary R&B singers such as Babyface, Brian McKnight, Luther Vandross, and groups such as Boyz II Men reflect just a few of his musical mentors. These influences struck a chord with Tommie, naturally moving him to do what many of us do, sing or hum along. Tommie didn’t just sing along, though. Instead, he began to hone his craft and his own rich, tenor tone, emulating much of what he was taking in and listening to.
Tommie has been singing since the tender age of five, which propelled him to share his gift during his early school years. He participated in the school chorus and also played the viola in the orchestra. Tommie’s musical ear from instrumentation blends well with delivering powerful vocal performances to his audiences. Having sung in many schools and city-wide talent shows, he has been recognized with various awards from those performances.
When asked about what motivates him to share his gift of song with others, Tommie relates that he has always enjoyed seeing how music speaks to human emotions. He relishes the way that music has the ability to brighten a room, bringing joy to the hearts of listeners, particularly ballads. Tommie considers his primary vocation and privilege to be sharing his love of Bible education and the wonderful hope it offers for earth’s inhabitants soon with others. Apart from this, his work in the medical field and sharing his melodious vocal talents, he feels extremely blessed to enjoy family time with his lovely wife of 10 years, Roxie. Additionally, they are the doting parents of 2 beautiful children, Saniya and Alex.
